This design of an extension and renovation to an existing heavy, masonry residence revolves around re-creating the courtyard space in the back yard. An extension of a kitchen/living/dining volume is laid out to have a series of relationships with the immediate external space to the east; from simple visual connections to a more direct interrelationship between dining and external entertaining space. The existing pool, in this instance becomes more of a visual water element that ties the external spaces together.

The heaviness of the existing house in contrasted dramatically by a series of light, floating roofscapes that form the extension, all of which sit delicately on a series of steel column/beam portal frames that slide past one another.
