The house in Iluka explores the courtyard house typology, creating a private outdoor space within the central area of the block. This central courtyard is treated as a subtraction from the dwelling’s mass of the site, stitching the front and rear volumes together rather than working autonomously as garden space.

The house is designed as a direct response to the site conditions: maximising both northern sun aspect and outdoor courtyard space while providing the clients with an innovative house design on what is a complex shaped block. The functional layout of the house allows for ample cross ventilation by stretching out the ground floor along the rear of the site boundary.

The design capitalises on the site’s location and surrounding views, framing the Indian Ocean through the upper floor balcony adjoining the master bedroom.
