Perth is OK described how our Farrier Lane project pushed the boundaries of sustainable and affordable housing design, while creating a tranquil home for Matt’s own family.

We’re super grateful to Perth is OK for featuring our Farrier Lane House on their website and social media channels, which enabled plenty of homehunters in Perth to learn more about our innovative approach to sustainable and affordable housing.
The article noted that because this was Matt’s own family home, he was able to experiment with this design and construction, testing new ideas and pushing the boundaries around just how sustainable a new house can be.
Journalist Sally Hall wrote:
“In MDC Architects founder Matt Delroy-Carr’s case, it was an opportunity to deep dive into all things carbon neutral – not only pushing the boundaries of sustainable design to create a tranquil home for his family, but creating the first true net zerohome in Western Australia (and just the third in Australia).
She also mentioned the fact that we carefully weighed up material choices – striking a balance between overall performance and embodied carbon – to reduce our impact on the planet as much as possible.
“Material selections balance requirements for peak thermal performance and longevity with the embodied carbon of materials – qualities which are often working in opposition to one another. (Sourcing materials more mindfully also played a role, such as utilising redundant stock bricks that were certified carbon neutral by the manufacturer.)
And while materials were all chosen for their sustainability rather than style, the resulting pared-back material palette of polished concrete, timber, cork and brick still retains a robust, resilient and timeless sense of elegance. “
In the article, Matt outlined how he used this rare opportunity to explore new ideas that later informed the development of our New House Plans. These are architect-designed plans that homeowners can buy from this website, making good design more accessible to more people, especially people who might feel shut out of the housing market by rising property costs.
“When I set out to design a new house for my family, I wanted to test the limits of architecture and building science, and also create a pathway for other homeowners – especially young families like mine – who share the same aspirations,” Matt said.
