Our Hinderwell House has won a major award at the WA Architecture Awards.
Our Hinderwell House project – which has taken out a major award at the WA Architecture Awards – proves that well-designed, comfortable, sustainable and affordable homes are within the reach of young families.
The Hinderwell House won The Wallace Greenham Award – Sustainable Architecture at the WA Architecture Awards on Friday 12 June, 2026.
As the category winner, the project will now proceed to the National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in Brisbane on 29 October 2026.
We’re especially pleased with this recognition because there was stiff competition in the Sustainability category, and this is a restrained and modest project – both in terms of its overall size and the materials used.
Our clients drove the significant level of investment in sustainable design – and their aspirations for a small, smart, affordable and sustainable home informed the siting, orientation, and planning of the house.
They also investigated the use of materials that aren’t commonly used in housing projects, and we used a range of products such as Durra panel, recycled bricks and compressed fibre cement. These perform well across a range of key metrics, such as thermal mass and acoustic performance, low cost, low maintenance and longevity.
In their feedback for the awards entry, our clients said:
“It’s a modest-sized house, and manages to feel very open and cosy at the same time. Within the confines of our budget, we wanted interesting products that we thought should be more widely used.
We use almost every square metre of this house on a weekly basis. There’s no wasted space.”
We’re thrilled with this recognition from our peers, and we’d like to thank:
- our clients for commissioning this great project,
- our collaborative team, who helped us deliver the design, and
- the jurors for their acknowledgement of the project’s sustainable design approach.
