MDC Architects was founded in East Fremantle in 2018 By Matt Delroy Carr.

We are committed to making architecture that is accessible to everyone, because we strongly believe that good design should be egalitarian.

Meet the team

We’ve developed innovative ways to deliver great design that’s more affordable. We do this by:

Providing a professional service that is knowledgeable, accessible and informal: we are easy to talk to and we’ll guide you through the complex process of designing and delivering your new home or development in a way that is informative, empowering and enjoyable.

Ensuring that your project responds to your site, street, neighbourhood and climate, and your brief and budget: we believe that great design doesn’t have to be expensive, but it must respond well to its context and the people who will use it.

Focusing on the quality of indoor and outdoor spaces, and liveability: we’re not fixated on size, and big doesn’t necessarily mean better. We enhance your enjoyment of home by focussing on reduction and simplification.

Taking a unique approach to architectural design and detailing, which borrows efficiencies from our construction colleagues: our unique approach to design and building enables us to work on small-scale projects that many other architects might turn down, so we can make great design accessible to more people.

Working closely with trusted builders and tradespeople to control costs, quality and time: our architects have bricklaying and carpentry experience, and we test concepts with builders early in the design phase. Taken together, these factors allow us to maximise your investment and carefully manage your budget. During the construction phase, we oversee the build to ensure quality standards are met onsite.

Matt Delroy Carr

Matt is a registered architect and academic, establishing MDC Architects as a platform to research and advocate for an improved status quo in the quality of our housing, with particular focus on the affordable and sustainable, including single homes and multi-residential developments.

MDC Architects’ work has evolved towards a housing delivery model that explores how architects can have a greater impact, to provide good fundamental housing options for the greater market. Matt is more interested in providing basic high-quality liveable homes for more people than obsessing over the individual architectural object. This is evident in the practice’s newer avenues of ‘off-the-plan’ housing and one-off advisory services to individuals looking to improve how they’re approaching the design and build of their own homes.

Matt’s interests extend to the development of good planning policy to inform our evolution of our urban environments. He has been continually involved in and consulted on the preparation and testing of WA’s new Medium Density Codes and is keen to see the impact this will have on the quality of our medium-density housing market.

Matt’s core aim is to create more liveable environments through a simple understanding of materials and space. He fundamentally believes that architecture should be for everyone and is central to an improved quality of life.

James Rietveld

James is a graduate of architecture (Dis) from the University of Western Australia and is a registered architect in WA. Since graduating he has become well versed in multiple sectors, working in freelance roles with multiple builders and architects across Perth.

James’ skills are well rounded, with sound knowledge of BIM, architectural visualisation, layout, and documentation. He has a keen eye for design and will always strive to improve on any project, no matter how big or small the detail is.

Mar Bernal

Mar is a graduate of architecture from Curtin University and has a number of years experience working between civic and residential projects.

Mar brings to the practice an eye for detail and a pragmatic approach to the design and documentation of MDC’s residential projects as well as an ambition to improve the general quality and liveability of our suburb’s housing.

Camryn Mercorella

Camryn, or Camo, is a recent graduate of Architecture from the University of Western Australia.

Camo joined MDC Architects as a student and has since established herself as a key member of the practice.

With a keen interest in efficient and affordable housing, as well as an exceptional ability to present beautifully composed drawings, Camo provides a skill set that has enabled the practice to reflect on and critique our work through drawn medium.
